Maintaining Normal Blood Sugar Levels

The term ‘Blood sugar levels’ is used when we talk about the amount of sugar present in the body’s blood stream. Mammals (including humans) maintain and tightly regulate the sugar level as part of what is known as metabolism – metabolism is the term used to describe how quickly the digestive system breaks down food, to be used as energy by cells in the body. The normal blood sugar level in humans is about 72 mg/dl – 72 milligrams (72 thousandth of a gram) of glucose per deciliter/decilitre (one tenth of a liter/litre). However, it is not consistent throughout the day because it fluctuates.

Lower Blood Glucose Levels

Blood sugar levels are usually low in the mornings (because you don’t eat anything when you sleep) and high after meals. If there is an increase or decrease of normal blood sugar levels it may be an indicator that a person has a medical condition related to their metabolism. If the level is dangerously above the normal blood sugar level it is considered hyperglycemia and if it is lower it is called hypoglycemia. The most common disorders or diseases related to blood sugar are Types 1 or 2 of Diabetes mellitus, conditions in which a person can suffer from;

a. A high blood sugar level, because the body is not producing enough insulin or the cells are not responding to insulin produced. An increase in the normal blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) may result in trauma, stress, stroke, illness, or surgery. Related health problems may be caused such as to the eye, kidney and nerves and it may also lead to heart diseases and diabetes.

b. A blood sugar level that is too low, with which the patient can suffer hypoglycemia. The symptoms for this disease are irritability, twitching, shaking, sweating, aggressive mentality, weakening of the arms and legs, pale complexion, loss of consciousness and in extreme cases brain damage. People suffering hypoglycemia must be given prompt medical assistance as restoring the body to normal blood sugar levels after hypoglycemia must be undertaken quickly and effectively so that extremely serious consequences can be prevented including coma or even death. In the immediate term it is more dangerous to have too little sugar in the blood than too much.

If your body is not responding properly to fluctuating blood sugar levels, this may be an indicator of diabetes. A rise in blood sugar levels occurs when the body fails to make insulin, or when the body is not responding well enough to the insulin produced. There are several known types of diabetes of which Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are most common, followed by Gestational diabetes, which occurs when pregnant women with no previous history of Diabetes suffer high blood sugar levels. Following pregnancy Diabetes symptoms cease in the vast majority of cases. Type 1 diabetes results when the body fails to produce insulin, and Type 2 diabetes results when there is a failure of the body to use the insulin produced effectively.

There are several tests to check for normal blood sugar levels;

1. The Fasting blood sugar check is a commonly conducted test in which there is a rise or fall in the blood sugar level after fasting for eight hours. The sugar level is required to fall between 70 to 99 mg to be considered as a normal blood sugar level.

2. The Oral glucose tolerance test is conducted to ascertain whether you are at the normal blood sugar level after consuming a glucose based drink.

3. The two hour postprandial blood sugar test checks to see if blood sugar levels rise or fall after two hours following a meal. The normal blood sugar level falls between 70 and 145 mg.

A natural maintenance of normal blood sugar levels is important to maintain a healthy body. Combining physical activity and closely monitoring food choice enables people to more easily maintain normal blood sugar levels. Weight is another important factor when looking at how to maintain a normal blood sugar level and therefore the importance of proper nutrition and regular exercise must always be taken into consideration.
